LSL Loco Set Loisr Kit reference 9244B0 Ho Sncf electric locomotive 2D2 9100 Final state headlights on front, era III.
The 2D2 9100 were built after World War II following the electrification of the Paris - Lyon line. These locomotives shared their axle configuration with steam locomotives, meaning the driving axles were mounted rigidly while at each end, a bogie ensured smooth curve negotiation, hence their name: 2D2, driving axles flanked by 2 bogies with 2 carrying axles. This rather old-fashioned technology was chosen out of caution, since at the time of their construction, it was uncertain whether the best solution was to use full-adhesion locomotives (the BB and CC types) or whether, on the contrary, it was better to use the 2D2 technique, already known and proven on older series. Ultimately, the decision would only be definitively made in 1955 when the BB 9004 and CC 7107 reached 331 km/h, definitively establishing total adhesion technology. Despite this, the 2D2s provided exemplary service in the Southeast, both at the front of heavy fast trains and on express or parcel services. Their career ended in late 1993, while the last survivors were only handling parcel and freight services.
