As a tribute to the Polish nation, Napoleon decided in 1807 to incorporate a Polish cavalry regiment into his Guard under the title of Chevau-légers. This regiment was armed with the lance in 1809 after Wagram and took the name of Chevau-légers Lanciers de la Garde, more commonly known as the Polish Lancers.
